The ADM1023 is a two-channel digital thermometer and under/over temperature alarm for personal computers and other systems requiring thermal monitoring and management. The improved accuracy offered by the device is optimized for Pentium III, allowing system designers to safely reduce the thermal guard band and improve system performance. The device can measure the temperature of a microprocessor using a diode-connected PNP transistor included on-chip with a Pentium III or similar processor; it can also be a low-cost discrete NPN/PNP device such as the 2N3904/2N3906. The new measurement technique eliminates the absolute value of the transistor base-emitter voltage, so no calibration is required. A second measurement channel measures the output of an on-chip temperature sensor to monitor the temperature of the device and its environment.
