The NCT72 is a dual channel digital thermometer and low/high temperature alarm for PCs and thermal management systems. It is pin and register compatible with the NCT1008, but the NCT72 allows the user to pull the /ALERT pin to 1.8V without increasing the Idd of the device. The NCT72 features a series resistance suppression feature that automatically removes the series resistance of the temperature monitor diode up to 1.5 kΩ (typical) from the temperature result, thereby filtering out noise. The NCT72 has a configurable /ALERT output, and switchable wide temperature measurement range. The NCT72 has a remote thermal diode temperature measurement accuracy of ±1°C and an ambient temperature measurement accuracy of ±3°C. The temperature measurement range defaults to 0°C to +127°C, compatible with the NCT1008, but it can be switched to a wider measurement range of -64°C to +191°C. The NCT72 communicates through a 2-wire serial interface that complies with the System Management Bus (SMBus/I2C) standard. The default SMBus/I2C address of NCT72 is 0x4C. The SMBus/I2C address of NCT72D is 0x4D. The address is useful if more than one NCT72 is used on the same SMBus/I2C. The /ALERT output signals when the on-chip or remote temperature is out of range. The /THERM output is a comparator output that can control the cooling fan on and off. The /ALERT output can be reconfigured as a secondary /THERM output if desired.
