The CAT5115 is a single digit POT that can be used as an electronic replacement for mechanical potentiometers and trimmer potentiometers. These devices are suitable for automated adjustments on high-throughput production lines, as well as applications where equipment requiring periodic adjustments is difficult to reach or located in hazardous or remote environments. The CAT5115 consists of a 32-tap series resistor connected between two terminals RH and RL. An up/down counter and decoder controlled by three input pins determines which tap is connected to the wiper RW. When energized, the arc wiper is always set to the midpoint position, which is tap 15. The tap positions are not stored in memory. The arc wiper control of CAT5115 is realized by three input control pins CS, U/D and INC. The INC input advances the wiper in the direction determined by the logic state of the U/D input. The CS input is used to select the device. This digital POT can be used as a three-terminal resistor divider or a two-terminal variable resistor. Digital potentiometers bring flexibility and programmability to a wider variety of applications, including control, parameter adjustment, and signal processing.
